Megève Review

Loveskiing’s Megève Review

Located in the south-east of France, Megeve is often considered as the original purpose built ski resort with its development starting in the 1920’s. Far from being a concrete jungle, Megeve is your typical alpine village, its architecture is part medieval, lined with cobbled streets with a rustic church at its helm. The resort boasts a large ski area with over 325km of pistes, however the lift system is rather dated and lacks a quality fast lift system. Another drawback is the altitude of the resort, making the snow risky in warmer weather. Nether-the-less despite no longer holding the crown of the ‘poshest’ resort in the French Alpes, Megeve still remains a key fixture for ski destinations.

• Breathtaking views across the mountain, including Mont Blanc.
• Superb destination for weekenders.
• Great woodland runs to escape in when the weather turns sour.
• Huge range of mountain restaurants to choose from.
• Brilliant designer chalets and hotels on offer.
• The micro-climate that Megeve finds itself in brings Megeve more than its fair share of snow.

• Low altitude of slopes can result in poor snow – however there is an extensive snowmaking network.
• An ageing lift system – lacks high quality fast lifts.
• Apres-ski scene is very much trendy rather than lively.
• Be prepared to pay more than average on meals and drinks.
• Many of the visitors are car users which can lead to high levels of congestion.

• Those after a truly alpine experience.
• Great for beginners and intermediates.
• Families
• Those after a notoriously ‘posh’ ski resort.

• Those after a lively après-ski scene – although there are no loud disco bars, there is a popular jazz scene.
• Those who enjoy skiing early and late season – Megeve has a relatively low altitude.
• Fast chair lift lovers – there is a distinct lack of fast chair lifts.
